A note from the founder

Hi! I’m Jacob.

As far as I can remember, I’ve been a systems-thinker and problem-solver by nature. Paperbark Cap Co. started as a straightforward solution to a personal frustration: I simply couldn’t find a hat that fit, sat, or was built the way I wanted it to be.

Most headwear on the market today feels disposable—template styles with badges slapped on the front, rough cuts with messy seams, and mass-produced blanks designed to fit a display rack rather than a human head. So I asked myself, “Why not build it myself?”

Growing up in Western Australia and making my home in the Pacific Northwest, I’ve always appreciated things built for real life—objects that hold up against dirt, water, and daily wear. I’ve also always loved the ‘old-school’ experience of walking into a brick-and-mortar shop, holding a product, and feeling the weight and character of its construction.

With online shopping becoming the default, we’ve lost that tactile connection. The result is a flood of fast fashion, frequent returns, questionable quality and cheap materials that quickly find their way to a thrift store rack—or worse, a landfill.

I believe that when you buy something, you shouldn't have to guess where it was made, whether the labor was ethical, or if the quality is real. Paperbark is an effort to bring back that intentionality. It’s an ode to the places that raise us, a dedication to physical craftsmanship, and a way to bring a little more analog connection back into a digital world.

Every cap is cut and sewn right here in the USA using heavy natural fabrics—designed from scratch around my favorite hat features and the exact custom dimensions I’ve been searching for (and what I suspect you might be looking for, too).

Cheap offshore manufacturing and inflated retail markups have broken our understanding of value—a $25 cap and a $150 cap are often built identically in the same factory. Paperbark is priced higher than standard headwear because we refuse to cut those corners. My commitment to you is straightforward: if you spend a lot, you should get a lot.

Thanks for being here, supporting small-batch domestic quality, and carrying our story on your head—and a little heart on your sleeve.

Warmly,

Jacob Fairclough
